My opening line comes from Inferno, book #1 in my Phoenix Rising Rock Band Series.

Blurb:

I’m a rocker with the eyes of the world on me. Waiting for my triumph or my downfall…just waiting.

Most of my life is in my hands. My destiny? That’s another story. My destiny isn’t as debt free.

My band, Phoenix Rising, arrives in Houston to cut a new album. Before we perform our first concert in the city and I choose my groupies of the night, I’m thrust into debauchery. Sleeping with a gorgeous woman twenty years older than me has its perks, especially when her husband orchestrated the encounter and eagerly watches. To me, performing is performing. If a man wants to share his wife, who am I to stop him?

Unfortunately for me, I don’t make a clean getaway as I leave the McCall mansion. Georgie, their sixteen-year-old daughter, is in the midst of her own intrigue, sneaking home in the middle of the night after an evening of drugs and sex with her older brother’s best friend. In her, I see me. She’s lost and drifting. Her hedonistic parents insist she’s old enough to make her own decisions. Instead of time and love, they give her money and things.

I’m a twenty-five-year old international superstar and I know better. I’m cocky and arrogant. I know it so I own it. Somehow, I’ve always bested the fates. I have all to lose—my reputation, my career, and my freedom. Her mother’s jealousy forces my hand and I take Georgie on the tour.

This is our story and our secret relationship and the destruction of my life. You know the adage about secrets?  Three may keep a secret, if two of them are dead. Wise words from a wise man. If only I had listened. Secrets have a way of revealing themselves in the harshest way.

Opening Line

It’s been written, that, for the life of the flesh is in the blood…For it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.

About Kat

Kathryn Kelly is the author of the Death Dwellers MC Series and Phoenix Rising Rock Band Series. For as long as she can remember, she has been a reader and has always loved books. Although she thought about writing her own books, she never thought she would actually do it. It took a dream from her first hero, Christopher "Outlaw" Caldwell and encouragement by her mother and friends before she put pen to paper and wrote Misled. This has been one of the most rewarding and amazing journeys of her life and she owes it all to her readers and fans. In her spare time, (admittedly not much), she likes scotch, champagne, music, and the New Orleans Saints. In reality, she's just a girl next door, a biker babe in her imagination, a mom, and a daughter.

Describe your writing style in three words…….

Senses, emotional, perspective

Which is your favourite chapter that you have written and why?

That is so difficult to choose. One of my favourite chapters is from my current book ‘Jenson’s Honor’ which is due out in September. Jenson is preparing a meal for Emilia, his intended mate, but his culinary skills are appaulling. He pretty much attacks a loaf of bread, hacking off chunks and Emilia has to come to the rescue. Emilia tells him that she will teach him to cook but will not clean up after him. Jenson points to an area in the kitchen and tells her that it will clean for him. Emilia stares at a cupboard dumfounded (she’s not been in the real world for 50 years) and says to Jenson ‘It’s a cupboard Jenson’ to which he falls about laughing. He then tells her it’s a dishwasher. The scene is lighthearted and comical which shows the character’s many layers of emotions. While stories are built on conflict and resolution, it’s good to have humor in books as it allows readers to experience all the emotions that the characters are feeling. Getting the balance is a key aspect to keeping readers engaged.

Is there a message in your novel/novels that you want your reader to grasp?

All of my books have a thread of powerful emotions. Love can break through fear, doubt and anger and happiness is obtainable even through adversity. Life is for living and grasping at opportunities that don’t always appear when you expect them to. Most importantly, protect and cherish the ones you love.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

The world of writing is both arduous and rewarding. When you write, remember that we learn through what we see, hear, sense and feel in our hearts. When you read a book, you need to be able to picture the scenes in your mind and understand how the characters are feeling. Description and comparing things allows the reader to form a visual picture from the written words they read, and allows them to become immersed in the story. Never give up, even when you feel you have no ideas or inspiration. We all have blocks from time to time, walk away, give yourself a break and return to it in a few days. Join groups on Facebook – there are lots of fantastic Authors out there who can help with promoting, queries and sometimes just to let you know how fantastic you’re doing. Lastly, believe in yourself and be proud of what you’ve achieved. To write a book is an amazing achievement.

If you could meet one of your own characters who would it be and why?

I would like to meet Elijah, the King of the Mist. Apart from being extremely handsome with the most amazing vibrant blue eyes, I would like to greater understand his feelings on being the leader of his race. He has a remarkable ability to listen and understand the emotional conflicts of his Lords and supports them to resolve their problems. Even though he was raised without his parents, he has a sense of loyalty that is astounding. Where did he gain such character and honor? I’d like to get a greater insight into how difficult it is to have such responsibility for his Lords, their mates and ultimately his race and how he will ensure their future survival. How will he deal with threat that intends to destroy them?

Most embarrassing moment?

I was travelling home from work and fell asleep on a train. I woke up thinking Id missed my station and jumped up from my seat. I unfortunately lost my balance and fell on top of the person in front of me. I couldn’t stop apologizing as I gathered myself up from his lap, trying to hide my embarrassment. From that moment, I always made sure I never fell asleep on a train again.

Quick fire:
Hard or Soft? - Soft
Early bird or Night owl? - Night Owl
Coffee and Tea? - Coffee
Right handed or Left handed? - Right handed
Cake or Cookies? - Cake

Death Dwellers Trivia and DELETED Scene from Misunderstood

As I write Misconduct, I'm going through the manuscripts of the other books in the series. It amazes me at the twists and turns each character's story arc took from where they were originally meant to go.

Deleted scene from Misunderstood (Draft #1.25):

The smell of the flowers almost choked Kendall. She sat stoically next to Johnnie in the second row of the graveyard. Megan sat in front of Kendall, her head turned into her husband’s shoulder, her own shaking while the priest spoke of her son being one of God’s special angels.
Kendall’s jaw clenched at the sight of the small, white casket, its lid closed and decorated with an elaborate bouquet. They’d even given him a name. Patrick Caldwell.
Johnnie sat next to her with blank stoicism, but Kendall saw how his gaze kept roaming to his oh-so-torn up ‘Megs’. Kendall had wanted to come the moment she’d heard about this event when Johnnie had returned home late that night after he’d gotten the woman’s call and forgotten Kendall existed.
She’d gotten up the next morning and listened with rapt attention as he explained Megs’s benevolence to her. Instead of spitting in his face at the reverence in his tone, she’d lowered her gaze and murmured her appreciation, praising Megan’s ability to forgive. She’d been convincing enough because when she requested to go to the funeral with him, he’d hesitated and walked away. She’d listened at his library door as he’d ran the idea by ‘Megs’ and here Kendall sat.
Feeling in control of her world again. She’d gotten to Johnnie because, though she was free to leave, he’d asked her to stay with. He said he’d gotten used to having her there. She had other plans on her agenda. Like getting pregnant for him and seeing Megan breathe her last.
The memory of her mother’s blood spraying her flashed in Kendall’s mind again and she hugged herself. Johnnie put his arm around her and hugged her, apparently believing her affected by this funeral.
Kendall didn’t quite understand why everyone was so hurt. They didn’t even know this baby because Megan hadn’t delivered it yet, so how could they mourn it?
“C’mon, baby,” Outlaw soothed. “C’mon. You can do this.” His voice broke. “We’ll place our roses together. Hear me, Megan? Together. Just like we made him. Together.”
Instead of moving, she clung tighter to Outlaw and Kendall rolled her eyes. Johnnie stood and Kendall went to follow suit. He shook his head and stopped her rise by placing a hand on her shoulder. Swallowing, Kendall watched in disbelief as Johnnie placed the flower on that too small casket, put a kiss to his fingers, then placed those same fingers against the shiny wood.
Johnnie knelt in front of Megan, down on one knee. The woman he’d identified as Megan’s mother slid closer to her. Val, Mortician, and Digger all did exactly what Johnnie had, but, instead of kneeling in front of her afterwards, the formed a semi-circle.
“We’re all here, baby,” Outlaw went on. “Your mom right next to you. Johnnie. Val. Digger. Mortician. Me.” He had his profile to Kendall and his long, dark lashes glistened. “Big Joe. Him and Ma, they gonna watch over our boy for us, Megan.”
Megan sobbed against Outlaw’s shoulder and it sounded as if her heart was really breaking.
“He’s not for us, anymore, baby,” Outlaw said quietly. “He was too special to stay here, so let him go in peace, baby. Let him go with his white rose from his mama.”
She didn’t move.
“Johnnie right in front of you to take that rose for you, sweetheart. If you need him to do it, he will. And I’ll give him mine. We put our roses together or Johnnie’ll hold them both and place them for us.”
Megan pulled away and sat with her head body, trembling. Johnnie went to pull the rose from her.
“No,” she choked out. “Christopher. I…we…this is important to him that we do it.”
Johnnie nodded and Kendall saw the moisture in his own eyes.
“My brave, beautiful, Megan,” Outlaw croaked.
He stood and brought Megan to her feet with him, his arm tight around her. Keeping a firm hold on her, they approached the casket. He raised their hands and dropped the rose he held, just as Megan released hers. He whispered something to her, hugged her to his chest, and nosed her hair, threading his fingers through it.
Johnnie nodded and a man wearing an eye patch helped Megan’s mother to her feet just as Outlaw swept Megan off hers. He started away from the casket. Kendall shifted and his gaze fell on her. Her stomach flipped at the burning hatred in his eyes. She almost believed he was capable of killing her. A moment later, he moved away from her, his precious wife in his arms, as if her sister had never existed.

Some Death Dwellers MC Trivia

One discussion in an amazing group I belong to called Author-4-Author posed the question: Are you a Plotter or a Panster?

I'm definitely a punster! If I ever doubted that I fly by the seat of my pants as I write, all I need do is look over the Death Dwellers series. I had plot points of where the stories where supposed to go. That didn't happen in several cases.

  • K-P and Dinah were supposed to have their own book, Mistrust. Some of the deleted scenes that I read between K-P and Dinah were both heart-warming and heart-breaking.

  • Originally, Kendall was Ellen's sister and had come to seek revenge. She came with a grudge against Megan because of Ellen but she ended up despising Megan because of Johnnie. she saw Megan as a girl to take out so she could get to Johnnie. Before I changed Misunderstood, Kendall made several attempts on Meggie's life while Outlaw was on a run.

  • A lot of Misappropriate was incorporated into Misunderstood. Outlaw was taking over the book, which is the reason I wrote Misappropriate.

  • In an earlier version of Misled, Johnnie and Meggie slept together. It was going to be a bigger love triangle. It seemed to complicate matters, so I deleted it and included it in Misunderstood, version 2.0. It happened when Outlaw was on the run and Kendall led Meggie to believe he was dead. Johnnie went to comfort her. However, it would've changed the entire dynamics of the story. More importantly, Outlaw would've killed both Kendall and Johnnie.

So that's it for now. My trip down memory lane that has helped me arrive at the spot I am in this amazing journey. Have a great Friday!

Kisses from Kat
